The number of available generative AI tools grows by the day and can be overwhelming. These are some of the most widely used tools which you may have heard of.

General Purpose AI Tools

ChatGPT

OpenAI logo

ChatGPT is OpenAI’s general purpose AI chatbot. This chat based tool can write emails, and stories, proofread, provide feedback on tone and clarity of provided text, summarize existing text and documents, play and build text based games, answer questions, and much, much more. Data entered into a free or personal paid ChatGPT account is not protected and may be used in training future GPT models. ChatGPT home page.

CoPilot

Microsoft CoPilot logo

Microsoft CoPilot is Microsoft’s general purpose AI chatbot, using OpenAI’s GPT 4o model with some tweaks. CoPilot can search the web to answer questions and provides citations for specific responses. The University provides a CoPIlot license to all employees, which protects all data entered and guarantees that entered data will not be stored or used in training, making this tool approved by the university for processing and interacting with sensitive data. Gemini

Google Gemini Logo

Gemini is Google’s general purpose AI tool. It can interpret text, images and code, generate code and text, and is capable of even more in Google’s free AI Studio. It can also be accessed when using personal Gmail, Docs, Slides, Sheets, and Meet applications. Gemini’s home page.

Claude

Claude AI Logo

Claude is a general purpose chatbot owned by Anthropic. Claude provides similar functions to other AI chatbots, but is especially capable when analyzing uploaded documents. Claude is able to analyze and interpret uploaded files up to 350 pages on their paid pro account. Claude home page.

Image Generation AI Tools

DallE

DallE is OpenAI’s image generation tool. It’s currently accessible within ChatGPT & CoPilot. DallE excels at generating text and cartoon styles. DallE info page.

Midjourney

Midjourney is an independent AI image generation tool accessed via their web app or Discord. Midjourney excels at creating aesthetically pleasing, highly realistic images and provides many tools for customizing and controlling image generation. Midjourney home page.

Stable Diffusion

Stable Diffusion is a free to use AI image generation tool which anyone can configure and run on a sufficiently powerful personal computer. Stable Diffusion requires technical knowledge to set up and use, but offers an unparalleled level of control over generated images. If you don’t wish to set up your own Stable Diffusion server, a wide array of paid services exist which provide access to Stable Diffusion. Stable Diffusion info page.

Adobe Firefly

Adobe’s Firefly image generation tool is accessible to UCF employees through your University provided Adobe Creative Cloud subscription. Adobe Firefly can generate images from scratch or be used to create generative fills while editing images in Adobe software, much like the older Photoshop content aware fill. Adobe Firefly info page.

Research AI Tools

Perplexity

Perplexity AI uses natural language processing to understand questions, then searches the internet, Wolfram Alpha, and academic papers to provide summarized answers with citations. Perplexity home page.

Consensus

Consensus accepts natural language research questions and searches academic research materials and databases to provide relevant papers and articles alongside info on the reliability of the source and nature of the paper. Their paid account includes synthesis of multiple sources. Consensus AI home page.

Scholarcy

Scholarcy analyzes uploaded documents, links, websites, and other research material and provides concise summaries of the provided resources with citations and notes. Scholarcy’s function is closest to being an AI powered Zotero or EndNote. Scholarcy home page.
