- By default Turnitin always allows students to submit their assignment as a text entry or upload files that can generate Originality Reports: Text (.txt), Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx), Microsoft PowerPoint (.ppt/.pptx/.pps/.ppsx), Microsoft Excel (.xls/.xlsx), PostScript (.ps/.eps), Portable Document Format (.pdf), Rich Text Format (.rtf), HyperText Markup Language (.html), WordPerfect (.wpd), Hangul (.hwp), and Open Office Text (.odt). They can also upload an assignment from Google Drive or Dropbox. In Turnitin settings, you can also allow students to submit any file that is less than 40 MB, has a minimum of 20 words, and is less than 400 pages.
- Assignments honor Turnitin resubmission settings; they do not automatically allow resubmissions like regular Canvas assignments.
- Turnitin cannot be used for group assignments.
- Turitin assignments cannot be previewed using Student View.
Adjust Turnitin Settings
- In the Course Navigation, click the Assignments tab.
- Click on the name of the assignment.
- Click on the Settings tab.
- This will display the main settings of the Turnitin assignment.
- The Title will automatically display the name you have already created for the assignment.
- After creating the assignment in Webcourses, it will display the assignment description text at the top of the page. In the Turnitin settings, there is another box for instructions if you would like to add any additional instructions for students to see when they view the Assignment Summary tab.
- To limit submissions to files that Turnitin can check for originality or expand submission to include all files, use the Allow submission of any file type? radio buttons [3].
- If you select the Yes button, any file can be submitted that is less than 40 MB, has a minimum of 20 words, and is less than 400 pages.
- If you select the No button, Turnitin will only accept files that meet the same file requirements and generate Originality Reports, which include the following file types: Text (.txt), Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx), Microsoft PowerPoint (.ppt/.pptx/.pps/.ppsx), Microsoft Excel (.xls/.xlsx), PostScript (.ps/.eps), Portable Document Format (.pdf), Rich Text Format (.rtf), HyperText Markup Language (.html), WordPerfect (.wpd), Hangul (.hwp), and Open Office Text (.odt). Files can also be uploaded from Google Drive or Dropbox.
- Similar to Webcourses, you can adjust the due dates by clicking the Calendar icons. If you have already set due dates in the assignment, they should automatically appear in the Turnitin settings. If the assignment does not include an Available From date, Turnitin sets the date one day prior to the date the assignment was created. The feedback release date defaults to the due date. If no due date is set, the due date and the feedback release date default to one week after the date the assignment was created.
- To view more optional Turnitin settings, click the Optional Settings link.
To allow late submissions, select the Allow late submissions Yes or No button. This option sets whether or not you allow submissions after the due date listed in the Turnitin settings at the top. If you select the Yes button, students can submit an assignment after the due date if they have not already made a submission. If you select the No button, students cannot submit the assignment after the due date.
Allowing Late Submissions
For this setting, the Allow late submissions goes by the due date in the Turnitin settings first and then the Due and Until dates listed in Webcourses. For example, in an assignment’s settings the Due date is set to March 26 at 11:59pm and the Until date is set to March 30 at 11:59pm. For a regular assignment, this would mean students could submit after the due date (March 26) and would be marked late, but could no longer submit after the assignment locks on March 30. In the Turnitin settings it will show the Due date as March 26.
- If you click No to not allow late submissions, students will not be able to submit after March 26, even though there is an additional Until date in the assignment settings.
- If you click Yes to allow late submissions, students will be able to submit after March 26, and until the March 30 lock date as specified in the assignment settings.
Extend Assignment Due Date for a Single Student
If you need to extend an assignment for a student, you can still do so by giving the student an individual due date following these steps:
After you have assigned the individual due date and saved the changes, you will then want to make sure that you have selected the option to Allow late submissions. This will ensure that students can submit past the due date, but not after the lock/until date.
- For paper comparisons, select the checkboxes for the sources you want to use when comparing assignment submissions.
- In the Originality Report generation and resubmissions drop-down, you can choose when students can view originality reports and if they can resubmit their assignment to Turnitin. Select the option you want to allow for students to submit assignments:
- Generate reports immediately (resubmissions are not allowed)
- Generate reports immediately (resubmissions are allowed until due date)
- Generate reports on due date (resubmissions are allowed until due date)
Multiple Turnitin Submissions
The only way to allow students to submit to a Turnitin assignment multiple times is if the second and third options above are selected.
- If you want to exclude any resources, you can select the Yes or No radio button next to the appropriate option.
- If you want to Allow students to view Originality Reports, select the Yes or No radio button. If you select the Yes button, Turnitin displays the Originality Report according to the option you previously set in the Originality Report drop-down menu.
- In the Submissions to this assignment will be stored in drop-down, select whether the submission should be stored in the standard paper repository or not stored at all.
Draft Assignments
If you are creating a draft assignment, you may not want to have Turnitin store the submission.
- If you want to attach a Turnitin rubric to the assignment, select a rubric from the rubric menu.
- If you want to save your Turnitin Settings options as your defaults for future assignments, select the Yes or No radio button.
- To save any changes to these Turnitin settings, click the Submit button.
Note: These instructions are for the External Tool version of Turnitin. There is also a Plagiarism Checker option built into all assignments in Webcourses@UCF, and while it is simpler to enable to use, it does offer less functionality in comparison to the external tool.
